ODORLESS
Odorless
In 1942/43, the SS engineer Kurt Gerstein asked Degesh, one of IG Farben's subsidiaries to remove during the manufacture of the insecticide Zyklon B the chemical components responsible for its odor thus removing the pesticide used in the gas chambers its irritating character. Zysklon B, which was odorless, was previously manufactured with an odor indicator to warn humans when the gas was used against insects.
In this series Odorless the artist uses this metaphor to symbolically capture how much the sweet smell of the actions and the past of certain companies - companies of which he is diverting the image here - have precisely over time "lost the smell" of theirs direct or indirect participation in the Nazi genocide.
It is also with this absence of “odor” that the artist plays on ironically by making visually significant this unfortunate contrast between this absence of odor from the pesticide used by the Nazis in the gas chambers and the companies which made around the “ perfume ” their success story.
